4 DaysCardiac Resynchronization Therapy - Defibrillator (CRT-D) is a life-saving medical device designed for patients with heart failure, particularly those at high risk of sudden cardiac death. This device combines the benefits of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT-P) with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to provide a dual approach for improving heart function and preventing life-threatening arrhythmias.
The implantation of a CRT-D device is similar to the CRT-P implant procedure, involving cardiac catheterization. A small incision is made in the chest, through which a catheter is inserted. The CRT-D device is then guided into the heart, where it helps to restore the natural coordination of the heartbeat across the heart’s left and right chambers. This procedure typically lasts between 3-5 hours, and patients can be discharged from the hospital within 5-6 days post-surgery.
The CRT-D device helps resynchronize the heart’s rhythm, improving the efficiency of the heart’s pumping function. It also includes a defibrillator that can detect abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and deliver a shock if necessary to restore a normal rhythm. This makes the CRT-D an essential device for heart failure patients at risk of sudden cardiac death.
The success rate of CRT-D implantation typically ranges from 65% to 80%, depending on the patient’s individual condition and response to treatment. Before the procedure, heart failure is typically diagnosed through methods like ECG and blood tests, which help determine the presence of cardiac arrest and the potential for future events.

After the CRT-D implant surgery, patients usually stay in the hospital for about 5-6 days. Once discharged, they must return after 7-10 days to have the stitches removed. During the first week, it is crucial to keep the incision site clean and dry to avoid infections. Patients are advised to refrain from lifting their arm for 6 weeks and should avoid activities like driving until cleared by the doctor. The device is typically checked every 6 months to 1 year to ensure its proper functioning, and its battery generally lasts between 7 to 10 years before it needs to be replaced.
CRT-D implants offer a life-changing solution for heart failure patients, improving the heart's function and reducing the risk of sudden cardiac death. With proper care and regular monitoring, patients can experience significant improvements in quality of life.
