About Dr. Joy Varghese

• Dr. Joy Varghese is a distinguished hepatologist and liver transplant physician with extensive experience in hepatology and liver transplantation. He also serves as a visiting consultant and member of the teaching faculty at the Department of Hepatology, Government General Hospital, Chennai, as well as the Institute of Liver Transplantation at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, Chennai.
• Dr. Varghese has been instrumental in establishing cadaveric liver transplant programs across various hospitals in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, working closely with both government and private sectors. He has contributed significantly to advancing liver transplant services in these regions.
• In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Varghese is an examiner for the National Board Examination in Gastroenterology and has authored over 60 research papers in indexed journals. His research has focused on hepatology and liver transplantation, and he has contributed chapters to various medical textbooks. He also serves on the editorial boards of the World Journal of Hepatology and the Global Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and is a reviewer for several prestigious national and international journals.
• Dr. Varghese previously served as Course Director for the Fellowship in Hepatology at Gleneagles Global Health City for three years, in affiliation with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. His training includes a fellowship in transplant hepatology from University Hospital Essen, Germany. Earlier in his career, he was an Assistant Professor at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Kochi, before transitioning to his role as Consultant Hepatologist and Liver Transplant Physician at Global Hospital & Health City, Chennai.
• With direct involvement in over 600 adult liver transplants, including both cadaveric and living donor transplants, Dr. Varghese brings vast expertise in peri-operative and long-term management of liver transplant patients. He is also highly experienced in managing patients in liver-intensive care units (ICUs), both medical and surgical. Notably, Dr. Varghese is among the pioneers globally in utilizing therapeutic plasma exchange as a treatment approach for liver diseases.
