5 أيام أو أسبوعIntensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is an advanced form of radiation therapy designed to treat cancer with high precision. This cutting-edge technique uses computer-controlled linear accelerators to deliver precise radiation doses to a tumor or specific areas within the tumor while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. It represents a significant advancement in cancer treatment, improving outcomes and reducing side effects.
IMRT employs sophisticated imaging techniques, such as CT or MRI scans, to create a detailed 3D map of the tumor and surrounding structures. This map allows the radiation oncologist to plan the treatment with extreme accuracy. The therapy divides radiation into thousands of tiny beams of varying intensities, which are precisely directed to conform to the tumor's shape. This ensures optimal targeting of cancerous cells while sparing nearby healthy tissues.
IMRT is utilized to treat a variety of cancers, including head and neck cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and brain tumors. It is particularly effective for tumors located near sensitive organs or structures, where conventional radiation therapy might cause significant damage. Its ability to focus radiation precisely makes it suitable for complex and irregularly shaped tumors.

The IMRT process begins with a thorough consultation with a radiation oncologist, who evaluates the patient’s condition and determines the suitability of the therapy. Once approved, the patient undergoes a simulation procedure, including imaging scans, to plan the treatment. During each session, the patient lies on a treatment table while the linear accelerator rotates around them, delivering targeted radiation beams. The entire process is painless and usually takes 15 to 30 minutes per session.
IMRT offers numerous benefits over traditional radiation therapy. It reduces damage to healthy tissues, leading to fewer side effects such as skin irritation, fatigue, and organ damage. Additionally, its precision enables higher radiation doses to the tumor, potentially improving treatment effectiveness. Patients undergoing IMRT typically experience improved quality of life during and after treatment.
